Project Overview

Aretrop Limited was entrusted with the delicate task of designing and building two custom security huts at Malta’s premier prehistoric sites: Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. Working within a Class A Archaeological Site and a Natura 2000 protected zone, this project required a specialized turnkey approach that balanced modern construction standards with strict environmental preservation.

Scope of Works: From Concept to Completion

Aretrop managed the entire lifecycle of the project, delivering a complete “design and build” solution that included:

  • 3D Rendering & Modelling: Produced detailed 3D design models to visualize the structures within the sensitive heritage landscape prior to fabrication.

  • Steel Structure Fabrication: Handled the full design, manufacturing, construction, and on-site assembly of the robust dip-galvanized steel skeletal structures.

  • Turnkey Fit-Out: Delivered a fully operational workspace through a comprehensive fit-out package including:

    • M&E Installations: Complete plumbing, electrical power, air conditioning systems, LED lighting and ELV systems.

    • Internal Finishes: High-quality tiling, thermal insulation, plasterboard wall/ceiling systems, plastering and painting.

    • Joinery & Apertures: Manufacturing and installation of Iroko timber doors, Iroko external cladding and timber-finish PVC double-glazed windows.

    • Furnishing: Supply of ergonomic office furniture.

Specialized Architectural Features

To ensure the structures blended seamlessly with the rural environment, Aretrop implemented specific architectural solutions:

  • Maltese Limestone Cladding: The exterior was finished with specialized cladding to mimic traditional rubble walls, harmonizing with the surrounding garrigue.

  • Green Roof System: Installation of a living green roof garden complete with an automated irrigation system, waterproofing, and pre-painted aluminium parapet wall coping.

This project demonstrates Aretrop Limited’s capability to execute complex logistical operations in sensitive environments. By utilizing off-site prefabrication and eco-friendly materials, we successfully delivered a modern infrastructure upgrade to a UNESCO site without compromising its historical value.
